ON MY LETTER TO THE FLEA THEATER - LINK TO FULL LETTER AND RESPONSES HERE
On Facebook, I publicly posted a letter addressing The Flea Theater in response to their dishonest Instagram declaration of solidarity with BLM and the recent protesting and advocacy for Black people in a multitude of spaces, including the theater community. I was inspired by a few Black artists who had already illuminated their experiences and felt it imperative that I add my story to the conversation as well as highlight the well-known toxic environment at The Flea that pre-dates me. The Flea does not pay its actors, yet demands constant commitment at the expense of paid work, personal finances, and mental health. The Flea is well-known to be a toxic, abusive environment that many in the theater community no longer support though they do not openly discuss it. I was able to do Scraps during my tenure as a Bat and I will forever be thankful for that play, my cast mates, and tech crew, but racism, abuse, gaslighting, and toxicity is too common an occurrence at that institution. Despite all this, the Flea maintains they are a safe space for diverse, young artists to find their footing in the theater community. The Flea does offer theatrical exploration and community, but the reality of the space is darker. The Bats and company thrive as artists because of their talent and enthusiasm, despite abuses from Flea. They bury financial anguish, low self-esteem/worth as artists perpetuated by Carol’s racism, elitism, and dismissive behavior and Niegel’s gaslighting, pettiness and dismissive behavior. There are true skeletons in their closet, many of which pre-date Niegel, none of which pre-date Carol. I could only tell my story and a select few others. I have been overwhelmed and grateful to the support I have received from current company, ex-Bats, and the theatrical community at large. The Flea’s behavior has gone unchecked for too long. It has been loudly whispered and mocked for decades in countless theatrical spaces. To protect my fellow BIPOC and every other artist, I feel it is imperative to move conversations around abuse and racism to the public, only then can we have some accountability. Had I kept my correspondence to emails, I truly believe I would have been silenced and ignored, possibly even maligned behind my back. Every artist, worker, etc. deserves to feel safe, seen, and compensated for their work. And a known racist should not get to hide behind a collective fear of losing career momentum or being labeled “difficult.” For peace of mind and hope for a more equitable future, I am willing to take risks to defend myself and others.

A public reading, part of The Upstairs Play Series of Wonderland, a new play by Kate Douglas (in-development). It’s story of non-imaginary people populating an imaginary town. Wonderland is a staged suburb built to conceal a World War Two fighter jet factory in case the Japanese bombers fly over. Three actresses have been hired to live ordinarily as townspeople as a finishing touch. But World War Two never ends, and the summer job stretches on forever. Wonderland questions the meaning of authenticity and denial in a manufactured world where imminent doom is possible in every moment.
